Kou is a queer multidisciplinary artist, community barber, and fierce femme of colour performer. Born in Ottawa, they moved to Toronto in 2013 to briefly attend and subsequently drop-out of post secondary school; they haven’t looked back since. Kou has built roots as an artist in Toronto by grounding themselves deep into their communities, seeking out peer and elder mentorships, launching themselves time after time into the unknown, and relying on community-based models of learning and skill exchange to further their practice and give back to their communities. Kou’s work is politicized and often speak to themes of disability justice, grief, trauma, resiliency, and identity. They are eager to make new discoveries and growth while continuing to explore many of these themes through collective sound, movement and spirit work as an apprentice with RAW.
